The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation Hosts 6th Annual End of the Year Celebration

The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation hosted its 6th annual end of the school year celebration, impacting nearly 400 inner-city youth at Washington Park in Hollywood, FL with an interactive football camp.
The camp was part of a variety of innovative initiatives that the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation provides throughout the school year.

“I had a blast today with these kids. It was great to reward them with a day of fun after a long year of hard work at school,” Twan Russell, co-founder of Russell Life Skills Foundation, said. “While we put an emphasis on reading, physical fitness is just as important. I am happy to help these children in any way I can.”

The event brought together 10 of the foundation’s centers for a day of fun and valuable life lessons.
The football camp included six football stations, including drills that emphasized throwing, catching and running. However, Russell’s primary goal was to communicate the importance of education, which he stressed to the children after the football camp ended.

Additionally, former Miami Dolphins cheerleader Julie Kicklighter donated nearly 500 F is For Football books to the foundation, further enhancing Russell’s message. “I wanted to make sure that I gave back to the community that supported me. Since I’m part of the Miami Dolphins family, I wanted to start by giving back to alumni with foundations such as Twan,” Kicklighter said. “Since the foundation talks about reading and life skills, the book incorporates a little sports and it helps with the alphabet. Whether the kids are exercising their mind or body, we want to so show we’re supporting them.”

The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation mission is to help inner-city children by teaching and reinforcing reading skills that are critical for success in life. The organization aims to “Open Books to Open Doors” and introduce young minds to the world of opportunities available through education.

Russell, a former NFL linebacker of seven years, and his mother, Corliss, established the foundation in 1998 after witnessing the challenges that illiteracy causes and the lack of educational reinforcement resources available to minority youth. Now, over a decade later, the foundation serves more than 1,000 children in Broward and Miami-Dade County.
